Rock & Roll Legend

beechcraft-bonanza

The Beechcraft Bonanza, probably the most famous aircraft in the world of Rock and Roll.  On this day in 1959 three rock and roll stars boarded one of these planes for their last flight.  RIP Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper died in the crash in Clear Lake, Iowa.

Joey “The Lips” Fagan in “The Commitments” (Alan Parker, 1991) recalled that night in the following dialogue:

Joey: Buddy Holly’s last words.

Bernie: What?

Joey: We can’t travel in that shit heap.

Outspan Foster: Did Buddy Holly say that?

Joey: Before he flew to meet his destiny on that storm-tossed night.

Groundhog day

Groundhog

Cruz beat Trump and Sanders is neck and neck with Clinton.  Now that the Iowa primary is over the people of the USA can turn their attention to more important matters.  Will we have another 6 weeks of winter?  Today we find out from the furry meteorologist – the groundhog.

I’m sitting on a dark train waiting to see what the dawn brings.  We had a heck of a gale last night and it feels like cold front weather this morning.  In Ireland that generally means a bright and sunny dawn, which is bad news for those who want an early spring.

Old English Poem;  Anonymous

If Candlemas be fair and bright,
Winter has another flight.
If Candlemas brings clouds and rain,
Winter will not come again
